What is CMA Course?

CMA Course Consists of three distinct levels. A candidate has to register and qualify exams for all these levels while adhering to the guidelines provided by The Institute of Cost and Management Accountants of India (ICMAI) in order to become a  certified CMA. 

Three levels of CMA Course are:

  • CMA Foundation
  • CMA Intermediate
  • CMA Final

Duration of Course

It takes about 3-4 years to complete all levels of the course and become a cost and management accountant. Duration of entire CMA course is as follows

  • Foundation – minimum of 8 months
  • Intermediate – minimum 10 months
  • Final – minimum 18 months.

Registration

CMA exams for all three levels are held twice in a year. Once in the month of June and once in the month of December. To apply for CMA course, you can go to ICMAI’s official website and register for CMA foundation course. You will be required to fill out the application form, pay a fee and upload the required documents.

CMA Foundation

CMA Foundation is the first and foremost level of this course. Only after clearing the foundation level can a candidate go on to intermediate and final. To apply for the course a candidate is required to visit official website of ICMAI and register. 

Who is eligible for CMA Foundation?

Eligibility Criteria to register for CMA foundation course is as follows:

  • The Candidate should have passed Class 10 or equivalent from a recognized board or institution
  • or, should have passed Senior Secondary School Examination under the 10+2 format from a recognized board or an examination recognized by the Central Government of the country.
  • or, should have passed the National Diploma in Commerce Examination organized by the All India Council for Technical Examination or by any state board of Technical Education, under the authority of the said All India Council.
  • or, should have achieved the Diploma in Rural Service Examination conducted by the National Council of Higher Education.

Fee Structure 

Registration fee for the foundation level is Rs. 6000, which is payable on or before 31st January for June term and 31st July for December term of examination. This fee is payed on the official website of ICMAI while registering for the course. 

 

CMA Intermediate

After CMA foundation comes CMA intermediate. This level can be pursued only after clearing the foundation level. CMA intermediate level has two separate groups i.e. group 3 and group 4. Both the groups contain 4 papers each, hence 8 in total. A candidate has to clear both groups in order to complete this level.

Who is eligible for CMA Intermediate?

A student is eligible to appear in CMA intermediate exam only after fulfilling the following conditions:

  1. Successfully passing CMA foundation Course
  2. Successful completion of Oral/Postal coaching
  3. Successful completion of skill training
  4. Successful submission of exam application form on or before exam specified due dates.

Fee Structure 

Registration fee for the intermediate level is Rs. 23,100 which is payable on or before 31st January for June term and 31st July for December term of examination. The fee can be paid in two instalments: Rs.12000 – 1st instalment and Rs.11,100 – 2nd instalment

 

Oral/Postal Coaching

Any student pursing certification in CMA, preparing for its courses, is required to undergo complete coaching for the respective course. A student can go for one of the two types of coaching:

  1. Oral Coaching 
  2. Postal Coaching

Oral coaching refers to going to the institute for classes and pursuing your course whereas in postal coaching, one doesn’t need to go to the institute but can study at home with the resources. For his/her oral coaching, a student can take admission in regional council or chapter or any other recognized oral coaching centre. 

Computer Training

A student appearing for CMA intermediate course is required to undergo complete computer training before applying for the examination. The training is required for the purpose of teaching the students skills and knowledge to operate all the software in management accounting field. 

For his/her computer training, a student can take admission in regional council or chapter or any other recognized oral coaching centre/ computer training centre. 

 

CMA Final

After successfully clearing CMA foundation and CMA intermediate course, you can move on to the last level which is the CMA final. CMA final course is the last straw. It consists of two groups i.e. group 3 and group 4. Both of these groups contain 4 papers each, therefore, you have a total of 8 papers in your CMA final course. 

Who is eligible for CMA Final?

A student is eligible to appear in CMA Final exam only after fulfilling the following conditions:

  1. Successful completion of CMA intermediate course (both groups)
  2. Successful completion of Oral/Postal coaching
  3. Successful completion of 15 months Practical Training
  4. Successful Submission of Exam Application Form on or before Exam specified due dates.

Fee Structure 

Registration fee for the final level is Rs. 25000 which is payable on or before 31st January for June term and 31st July for December term of examination. The fee can be paid in two instalments: Rs.15000 – 1st instalment and Rs.10000 – 2nd instalment

 

CMA Articleship: Practical Training for CMA Course

CMA articleship refers to the practical training one has to go through in order to complete his/her CMA course and be eligible to become an official member of The Institute of Cost Accountants of India. It is gaining practical experience by working in an organization as a trainee and learn to apply his/her theoretical knowledge to practical use in a professional field.
