How to Choose CA Foundation Coaching: What to Check Before You Join

There is no official list of the best CA Foundation coaching in India: ICAI does not rank private institutes, and coaching is not a condition for the exam, which needs only four months' registration with ICAI and having appeared in Class 12 (ICAI FAQs on the New Scheme, Q 2.7). The right coaching for you teaches ICAI's four current papers in the exam format, finishes the syllabus well before your exam session, and holds up against the free live classes ICAI's Board of Studies runs for all four Foundation papers.

What to do before you choose

Settle these four things first. They decide which batch you need and whether you need paid coaching at all.

  1. Pick your exam session. Foundation exams are held in January, May and September, and you must register with ICAI at least four months before the exam month (ICAI FAQs, Q 2.7 and Q 2.11). The next exam is on 3, 5, 7 and 9 January 2027 (ICAI announcement of 23 September 2026).

  2. Register with ICAI. The ₹9,000 Foundation fee includes ICAI's study material and the prospectus (ICAI FAQs, Q 2.2), and the study material is also on the BoS Knowledge Portal. Our CA Foundation course guide covers eligibility and registration in full.

  3. Try ICAI's free classes. ICAI's prospectus describes free live classes for every Foundation paper, with unlimited access to the recordings. The batch for the January 2027 exam started on 16 and 17 September 2026, and joining on Zoom asks for your registration number (BoS announcement of 2 September 2026). A week of these classes gives you a benchmark for any paid course; the timetable and how to join are in our guide to CA Foundation online classes.

  4. Decide between online and classroom. ICAI accepts either, or none. Our comparison of online and classroom coaching for CA sets out the trade-offs.

How to compare coaching institutes

Once you know your session and format, judge each option on the points below. In our experience, a demo lecture and a conversation with recent students tell you more than any advertisement.

Standing and accreditation

ICAI's prospectus says its regional councils and branches organise coaching classes for Foundation, and that ICAI accredits colleges and universities to run CA coaching under its National Policy for Oral Coaching Classes; 22 had been accredited when the June 2025 prospectus was printed. ICAI's regional councils are in Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Kanpur and New Delhi. If you want a classroom in your city, ask the nearest ICAI regional council or branch whether it runs a Foundation batch, and see the BoS portal's Accredited Coaching Classes page.

For private institutes, read reviews from several places and look for recent ones, since ICAI's New Scheme has applied since 1 July 2023 and older feedback may describe a different syllabus.

Faculty

Find out who will teach each of the four papers, not just who founded the institute, and watch a full demo lecture by that teacher before you pay. Check that they teach in the language you will write the exam in: ICAI lets Foundation candidates answer in English or Hindi (January 2027 announcement). Online, you can choose a different teacher for each paper.

Class format, recordings and doubt support

Ask whether classes are live or recorded, how long recordings stay available, and whether access continues if you move to a later exam session. Ask how doubts are answered and how quickly. ICAI's own live classes offer recordings with unlimited access, notes, assignments and MCQs, and doubt resolution during the class (BoS announcement of 2 September 2026), so a paid course should offer at least as much.

For a classroom batch, check that the timings fit around school or college, since you must have appeared in Class 12 before your first Foundation exam (ICAI FAQs, Q 2.7).

Study material and tests

The course must cover ICAI's four papers: Accounting, Business Laws, Quantitative Aptitude and Business Economics, 100 marks each (ICAI FAQs, Q 2.9). Papers 1 and 2 are written-answer papers, while Papers 3 and 4 are objective, take 2 hours and deduct 0.25 marks for every wrong answer (ICAI FAQs, Q 2.12 and Q 2.13; January 2027 announcement).

Look for written tests with checked answer scripts for Papers 1 and 2, and timed MCQ tests with negative marking for Papers 3 and 4. A course's notes should add to ICAI's study material, not replace it. Compare its test papers with ICAI's free Revision Test Papers and Mock Test Papers on the BoS portal.

Result claims

Results are worth checking, but only with numbers you can verify:

  • Ranks. ICAI issues Foundation rank certificates only up to the 20th all-India rank, and only to candidates with at least 60% in aggregate (ICAI Guidance Notes, September 2026). Ask for the exam session and roll number behind any rank claim; ICAI's result press release names the top three rank holders.
  • Pass rates. Ask how many students enrolled, not only how many passed. For context, 18,124 of the 90,217 candidates who appeared in the May 2026 Foundation exam passed, or 20.09% (ICAI press release, 3 July 2026).
  • Recent sessions. Results from before the New Scheme describe a different exam.

Former students

Talk to students who took the Foundation exam in the last one or two sessions. Ask whether the syllabus was finished in time for revision, how quickly tests were checked and doubts answered, and what they would do differently.

Coaching fees and ICAI's fees

Each provider sets its own coaching fee, so compare what is included: live or recorded classes, printed notes, test series, doubt support, how long access lasts, and the policy if you switch to a later session.

ICAI's fees are separate and are paid whichever way you study: ₹9,000 to register for Foundation (ICAI FAQs, Q 2.2) and an exam fee for every attempt, which is ₹1,500 at centres in India for the January 2027 exam, plus ₹600 if you apply after the last date (ICAI announcement of 23 September 2026).

If you decide that ICAI's study material and free classes are enough, our guide to self-study for CA at home shows how to build a routine around them.
