CA Final Books: ICAI Study Material for Each Paper and How to Pick Reference Books

ICAI study material for each CA Final paper

CA Final has six papers in two groups (ICAI FAQs, Q 4.3), and since the May 2026 exam it is held twice a year, in May and November (ICAI announcement, 6 April 2026). For each exam, ICAI's Board of Studies publishes a list of the study material that applies. The list for November 2026 is:

So "how many books" depends on how you count: Papers 1, 3, 4 and 5 come in 5, 3, 4 and 4 modules, and the portal lists Paper 2 as a single set. On top of that come the two compulsory self-paced modules (below).

Where to get them

• PDFs: the BoS Knowledge Portal lists the Final study material in English and Hindi medium, paper by paper.
• Printed copies: after you register for the Final course, ICAI emails you login details for ordering the Final study material, and the SET A and SET B module material, through its CDS portal (ICAI FAQs, Q 4.4).
• SET C and SET D modules: the material is on ICAI's New Scheme of Education and Training page (Q 4.4).

If you are taking the exam in May 2027 or later

Editions change with the law. When we checked on 7 October 2026, the portal already listed a new edition of Papers 4 and 5 "applicable for May 2027 exam onwards", with only part of it published so far. Before buying any book for a later attempt, check the study material list ICAI issues for that exam.

Law and costing are now self-paced modules

Older book lists, including the earlier version of this article, have separate "CA Final law" and "CA Final costing" books. Under the new scheme neither is an exam paper. Corporate and Economic Laws is SET A and Strategic Cost and Performance Management is SET B, the two compulsory Self-Paced Online Modules; you need at least 50% in each, and printed study material is available for both (ICAI FAQs, Q 7.4, Q 7.5 and Q 7.7). Both modules still matter for the exam: ICAI lists their study material among the inputs for Paper 6. All six papers and four module sets are laid out in CA Final subjects under the new scheme.

Audit books (Paper 3)

For audit, the ICAI book is the three-module study material for Paper 3, Advanced Auditing, Assurance and Professional Ethics, in the November 2024 edition (reprint August 2025 onwards). It is not complete on its own for November 2026: the RTP for that exam opens with an "Academic Update" that amends specific pages, for example adding the 2026 RBI changes on registering non-banking financial companies to Chapter 14 (ICAI RTP, Final Paper 3, November 2026). Paper 3 is a closed-book exam (ICAI FAQs, Q 4.8).

Paper 6: what to take into the open-book exam

Paper 6, Integrated Business Solutions, is the only open-book paper and is entirely case-study based (ICAI FAQs, Q 4.8). For November 2026, ICAI lists these inputs for it:

• the study material of Papers 1 to 5 (the editions in the table above);
• the SET A study material (September 2025) with the amendments relevant for November 2026, and the SET B study material (October 2023);
• the IBS Case Study Digest (July 2024 edition) and Volume II (July 2025 edition), plus case studies published online.

ICAI's Guidance Notes for November 2026 say you may bring your own material "in hard form" to the exam hall: study materials, practice manuals, ICAI's revision test papers, textbooks, bare Acts, your own notes or other reference material. Mobile phones and other electronic devices are not allowed, material cannot be exchanged in the hall, and you must write answers in your own handwriting without pasting from the material. The paper lasts four hours. In our view, a small set of tabbed, well-indexed material is easier to use in four hours than a full bag of books.

Practice papers to use with the books

ICAI's Board of Studies publishes practice material for every paper, including Paper 6:

• Revision Test Papers for each exam; the November 2026 set has one per paper and carries the academic updates mentioned above.
• Mock and model test papers: ICAI ran two Mock Test Paper series for the November 2026 exam, in September and October 2026, in physical and virtual mode (BoS announcement, 10 August 2026). Model Test Papers for Group I and Group II are on the Knowledge Portal.
• Past question papers and suggested answers for every Final exam under the new scheme, from May 2024 to May 2026, on icai.org.
• Free Live Virtual Classes: the batch for the May and November 2027 exams began on 20 July 2026 (BoS announcement, 13 July 2026).

Use older papers with care. ICAI warns that its suggested answers are not revised for later changes in law or syllabus, and that where answers to the same question differ between its publications, "the solutions provided in the most recent edition of BOS inputs will take precedence".

How to choose a private reference book

We don't rank private books. In our view, a reference book is worth buying only if it passes these checks:

• It follows the current papers. Books built around old paper names, such as Strategic Financial Management, a separate Corporate & Economic Laws paper or electives 6A to 6F, were written for the earlier scheme. Some old BoS publications, such as the Final subject-wise capsules, still sit on ICAI's portal under those old paper names.
• It matches your exam's law. For the tax and audit papers, compare its coverage with the RTP and the statutory, judicial or academic update for your exam.
• It has MCQ practice. In Papers 1 to 5, 30% of the marks are case-scenario or case-study MCQs, and in Paper 6 the share is 40% (ICAI FAQs, Q 4.7; Guidance Notes, November 2026).
• It adds something. A summary book or question bank that complements the ICAI material is more useful than a second full textbook for the same paper.

Study tips for using the books

• Read the ICAI study material first and make short notes; add a reference book only where you need more explanation or practice.
• Set aside a few hours of self-study every day alongside any classes.
• When you finish a paper, practise its past papers and mock test papers under exam timing.
• Plan a schedule that rotates subjects rather than staying on one for weeks, and leave time for things you enjoy.
• Keep the last weeks for revision with the RTP and updates for your exam.
